State To Advance Highland Park Schools $178K

LANSING (AP) - Michigan officials will advance the financially troubled Highland Park school district $178,000 to help meet payroll this week.

The announcement Wednesday is based on a commitment from the Detroit-area district the money will go toward employee payroll. Teachers and other employees continue to work this week despite not getting paid as scheduled last Friday.

A state-appointed emergency manager soon could be back on the job in the school district. Emergency manager Jack Martin was temporarily sidelined after a judge ruled a state review team whose recommendations led to his appointment violated the Open Meetings Act.

The financial advance will be the third early payment to Highland Park from the state this year. The district was advanced $188,000 in January and $261,000 earlier in February.
