Scene In Detroit: Beauty And The Brows

By Amelia Kanan, CBS Detroit Blogger

"I'm super embarrassed and I apologize. My eyebrows are out of control." And, they were. I wasn't being insecure. Due to the fact that half of my genes come from a land in the Mediterranean, I am cursed/blessed with bushy eyebrows.

They fight for their right to unite and I am the dictator that has to keep blowing up the bridge they keep trying to rebuild. Since I've had these brows from the day I was born and can't fight it alone, I've sent many brave souls to the front lines of this battle.

I don't think it's a pretty job so I always feel the need to apologize to the aesthetician I have to pay to do my dirty work. To make matters worse, most times the aesthetician's own eyebrows are barely existent. This only inflicts more shame onto me.

Myranda was different. She wasn't like the other girls. Even though her eyebrows are perfect and she is a "cute" girl (I used to prefer old immigrant ladies) she has a way about her that melts away any diffidence I may have. As soon as I finished saying "out of control", she scrunched her brows and said "Don't apologize! I actually LOVE it when there is a lot to clean up!" She had me at "she scrunched her brows".

Before, when I've apologize to other waxers they've said things like "That's OK..." or even "Wow. Yeah. OK, let's fix it." That's when my insecurity stews into resentment. "That's OK?" "Wow?"!! Wrong answers! You should be thanking me for keeping you in business.

I've been to Myranda a few times and not only is she quick, painless and efficient but she is a just a good person as well. As a licensed Esthetician, Myranda doesn't just wax brows but full bodies (men, don't be shy some of you could benefit as well) and also offers threading and make-up services too. To boot, she is a certified massage therapist which explains her soothing and comforting nature.

Even though it's a routine business, the idea of paying someone to touch you is an intimate thing so when you find someone who A: isn't awkward, B: makes you feel at ease and C: does a good job, you need to hold on to that because it's unfortunately rare. Naturally, since I've found Myranda, I refuse to go to anyone else.

If you are interested in any of Myranda's waxing, make-up or massaging services you can schedule an appointment at the reputable but unpretentious Cass Corridor neighborhood salon Curl Up and Dye.
