Deadline Day In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - Governor Rick Snyder will be meeting with city leaders in Detroit on Monday, which is deadline day for the city to agree on a solution to its financial problems.

Also scheduled to meet on Monday, the 10-member review team looking at Detroit's books. The city is expected to run out of money in May. But no consent agreement can be finalized until a court hearing later this week. Meanwhile, Mayor Dave Bing is expected to remain in the hospital for several more days.

Is the Emergency Manager Law working?

One year after Governor Snyder signed Michigan's new Emergency Manager bill into law, is there any evidence that it's working?

The man who helped write that law, Republican State Representative Al Pscholka of Berrien County, says yes -- both in Metro Detroit and in southwest Michigan--

"We've seen Benton Harbor, in my district, start to come out of that process and start to get toward a balanced budget," Pscholka said. "We've seen some success in Ecorse; we've seen some success with the Benton Harbor area schools in my district with staying out of emergency management and having to make a number of tough decisions in order to balance their budget."

Pscholka added that the law could use some tweaking -- specifically, he'd like to see the ability to call in a financial "swat team" -- and more clarity on how a city exits the E.M. process.

Tune in Monday at 7:00 p.m. for a one-hour special on Michigan's Emergency Manager law, hosted by WWJ's Jayne Bower and City Beat Reporter Vickie Thomas.
