Higher Ed Summit Planned For May 7: An extraordinary group of state and national higher education, economic and business leaders will convene in Lansing Monday, May 7 to share strategies for strengthening Michigan by leveraging its higher education system. The summit will highlight national best practices that involve using higher education to drive the economy, including translating university research and innovation into jobs and creating a skilled and talented workforce to meet current and future job demands. This panel will explore the leading role Michigan's universities play in driving the innovation that is critical to our economic recovery and long-term prosperity. By 2025, Michigan will need 1 million additional college graduates to meet job demand -- a 17 percent increase over the current trend.   Meeting this goal is made more difficult as Michigan must compete with the rest of the nation and globe for talent. Sustainable Investing Event Coming: A conference on sustainable and responsible investing, "21st Century SRI:  Providing a More Comprehensive Way to Assess and Improve Corporate Value," will be held Wednesday, April 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ferndale Public Library, 222 E. Nine Mile Road. The presenter is Steven Yoon, regional vice president of Calvert Asset Management Co. Inc. Metered parking is available in nearby municipal lots. In addition, attendees will hear a briefing on land conservation efforts in Oakland, Macomb, Genesee and Lapeer Counties by Chris Bunch, Executive Director of the Six Rivers Regional Land Conservancy. Following the presentation, Ferndale Library Director Kate Pohjola will provide tours of the environmentally friendly features of the library's award-winning 2010 renovation and expansion. Future Food Event Coming: The Imagined Food Futures Symposia, an initiative of the Global Food Protection Institute, announced its inaugural conference, "Ensuring Safe Food in Dynamic Food Systems." The conference will be held May 1 and 2 at the McCamly Plaza Hotel in Battle Creek. U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, Chairwoman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, & Forestry, will join the conference with a special video message. The program will feature speakers from academia, regulatory, industry and public advocacy groups involved in safer food systems. By examining food systems through the lens of food safety, the conference will include innovative ways to make food safety a global priority. Participants can expect engaging speaker presentations with a scenario planning exercise to create a blueprint for food systems and safety. The International Food Protection Training Institute is building the training infrastructure for the national integrated food safety system.
