Bigger Health Care Center To Service Detroit's Uninsured

DETROIT (WWJ) - There's a new state-of-the-art healthcare facility in Southwest Detroit.

A much larger Community Health and Social Services (CHASS) center will provide services to 28,000 patients in the community -- that's 17,000  more than the old facility.

The $17 million building includes two primary care clinics with 24 exam rooms, diagnostic area, dental office, lab and children's play area.

CHASS CEO Ricardo Guzman spoke with WWJ  Newsradio 950 about the new facility.

"There's just more room for people to be able to come in, more room for us to see more folks, because the uninsured and the under-insured in the city continues to grow as thing have not gotten significantly better," he said.

Guzman said construction alone brought in about 200 jobs. "The actual full-time folks that we will hire for the center will be about an additional 52 full-time staff folks," he added.

The CHASS center is located on West Fort Street. A formal celebration of the opening will take place Friday from 6-10 p.m.
