Arson Reduction Program Names 2 Prosecutors As 'Tops' For Arson Convictions

DETROIT (WWJ) - Since 2010 the Wayne County Arson Reduction program has been a pivotal part in the conviction of  more than 14 arsonists who were responsible for more than $1.5 million in property damage.

Two Wayne County prosecutors were singled out for recognition Thursday.

WWJ Newsradio 950's Marie Osborne reports that Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy and Assistant Prosecutor Louisa Papalas were named prosecutors of the year by the Michigan Arson prevention committee.

Papalas says since she took the job, she has been inundated with cases.

"We have had some successes in fighting this ongoing battle - this is a war - and we look at this as a fight - one battle at a time," said Papalas.

Papalis said people are often reluctant to come forward with information on arson but reward money has helped.

The two prosecutors are being honored for their role in helping convict more than 14 arsonists since 2010.

Anyone with information can call Arson Control at 1-800-44-ARSON. The program awards $5000 for tips.
