State Rep. Says She Won't Run Again, Eyes Mayor's Office

DETROIT (AP) - A Democratic state representative from Detroit confirms she won't seek re-election as she pursues a race for mayor of Michigan's largest city.

Rep. Lisa L. Howze made the statement in an email Tuesday, the deadline for filing for another term in the Legislature.

Howze first announced in February that she planned to forgo another term in the House and seek the Detroit mayor's office in the 2013 election.

Howze has said her experience as a certified public accountant and a legislator are keys to helping the financially struggling city.

She says that stepping down from her seat is a way to signal her sincerity to Detroit voters.
