Motorist Passing Cars On Left Shoulder Of I-94 Causes Deadly Accident

LIMA TWP. (WWJ) - Michigan State Police say one person is dead and three are injured, including a baby, after a motorist trying to pass vehicles on the left shoulder of a busy Metro Detroit freeway lost control and rolled over multiple times.

Investigators say the crash happened around 8:50 p.m. Tuesday on eastbound I-94 near Dancer Road in Lima Township.

According to witness reports, the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when the driver went onto the left shoulder of the freeway to pass vehicles.

Police say that's when the vehicle lost control, drove off into the median and rolled over multiple times before coming to a rest upside down, in the east bound traffic lanes of I-94.

The driver, a 23-year-old female from Ypsilanti, was ejected from the vehicle and was transported to the University of Michigan Hospital by survival flight. She was last reported in critical condition.

One of the passengers, a 17-year-old male from Jackson, was also ejected from the vehicle and received fatal injuries from the crash.

Two other passengers, a 28-year-old male and a one-year-old infant from Ypsilanti, were transported to the University of Michigan Hospital. Current medical conditions are unknown.

Police say the driver and the two adult passengers were not wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. The infant was restrained in a child safety seat.

Names are not being released pending notification of family. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

An investigation is ongoing.
