Shooting Suspect Found In Same Hospital As Victims

WARREN (WWJ/AP) - Warren Police say they found a shooting suspect in the same hospital emergency department as two victims.

The 22-year-old man, who was lying just two beds away from the victims, was arrested early Thursday at Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Police say the shooting happened after earlier fights, and two Hazel Park men were wounded as they drove away. A 56-year-old man was shot in the back and a 20-year-old man was shot in the foot.

The injured men drove themselves to the hospital, where staffers notified police of the shooting. Officers interviewed the victims and a witness before phoning the suspect's girlfriend.

"She claims she's in Hazel Park but does not want to get involved in the incident whatsoever, and hangs up on the officer," Warren Deputy Police Commissioner Louis Galasso told The Macomb Daily. "Officers call back, and she reluctantly tells the name of her boyfriend and hangs up again."

When police called the woman a third time, a man answered the phone and told police that the suspect went to Detroit Receiving Hospital for injuries he sustained during one of the earlier fights.

That's when officers interviewing the victims spotted the suspect in a nearby hospital bed. After learning doctors planned to discharge him, police took the man into custody.

The suspect's name is being withheld pending formal criminal charges, which could come as early as Friday.
