Suppression Of Free Speech At Core Of V-Day Rally

LANSING (WWJ) - Thousands of men and women take to lawn of the State Capitol Monday night to hear a special performance of the "Vagina Monologues".

Eve Ensler the author of the "Vagina Monologues" was there along with the two state representatives who were silenced on the House Floor for their remarks on the issue of abortion.

"What's more concerning than the word vagina is the majority in the house suppressing free speech," said John Armegolis of Ann Arbor to WWJ's Sandra McNeill.

State Representative Lisa Brown (D-West Bloomfield)  and Legislator Rep. Barb Byrum (D-Onondaga) were banned from speaking on the House floor.

Student Andrew Lee was just passing by and was surprised to learn the reason behind the rally.

"I think it's sending the wrong message to women, and it's being sexist," said Lee.

Debra Rolls got to the Capitol  early.

"I think it is absolutely ridiculous that this is even happening in this day and age - that someone would be banned from talking for saying the work vagina," said Rolls. "It's a body part for goodness sake, it's what makes women, women."
