Football Camp Run By Former Pro Athlete Gives Young Boys Real Skills
HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - For the next two days, through June 21st, elementary school boys are being given the opportunity to work with former pro-football player Reggie McKenzie, who's foundation holds free football camps each year at the Highland Park Football field.
"You've got to understand that football starts (now) ... you've got a lot of high schools, that have got their kids out there ... I mean the good ones, they've got their kids out working on drills - getting ready for August," said McKenzie to WWJ's Pat Sweeting.
Detroiters David Whitaker, who brought a couple of youngsters to the camp, stood watching the boys running drills, and recalled when he was taking part -- as they are now:
"Definitely they taught you more than football - they taught you discipline, dedication and just a desire to never give up, they were excellent role models and I can't say enough about it," said Whitaker.
Whitaker says the McKenzie Foundation Football Camps, which have run for decades, helped motivate him toward a scholarship.
