Avila Provides Ice Cream Relief In The Heat

By: Jeff Riger

Tigers catcher Alex Avila was out and about in Detroit on Wednesday morning providing ice cream for free to patrons walking around the city. Avila, along with the help of Hudsonville Ice Cream Company was handing out scoops of Mint Chocolate Chip and Tiger Tracks ice cream, which Avila, by the way enjoys both the same.

As for baseball related matters, Avila did provide some insight to the teams recent winning ways. The Tigers have won 8 of their last 11 games and currently sit just a game and a half out of first place behind the Chicago White Sox. "It's a long season" said Avila. The catcher then went on "I know we didn't start off like everybody wanted us to, but hopefully we finish like everybody wants us to."

Avila is due to come off the disabled list Thursday and fully expects to be in the lineup when the Tigers wrap up a 3 game interleague set with the Cardinals that starts at 1:05pm. "Everything feels great and I expect to be back tomorrow and be able to help the team" said Avila who is recovering from a hamstring injury.

All in all the ice cream social (if you will) was a success for everybody included, with the exception of one; a very large, heavy layered Tiger. His name is Paws and he is the Detroit mascot who was out in the 90 degree heat helping out. "I would not want to be him right now but I'm sure he will be eating a lot of ice cream to keep cool" said Avila.

In this heat, I'm not sure that will even be enough...
