Man Drowns At Monroe County Quarry

MONROE TWP. (WWJ) - A young man is dead after a night time swim at the site of a quarry in Monroe County.

Police say 20-year old Terence Reid-Lance of Pontiac was taking a dip with friends at the France Stone Quarry around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when he disappeared below the surface.

Emergency workers responded, including members of the Sheriff's Office Dive Team. Police say divers found Reid-Lance's body around 10:40 p.m. in an estimated 35 foot deep area of the quarry, approximately 25 feet out from the edge.  Foul play is not suspected.

The quarry is located at the corner of Dunbar Road and South Dixie Highway. The quarry was actively mined for more than 80 years. After mining stopped in 1993, the quarry filled with water and is known as "Lake Monroe" to the locals.
