Merit Offers Course On Essentials of OpenFlow: Ann Arbor-based Merit Network Inc. will host a workshop on OpenFlow, instructed by engineers from InCNTRE at Indiana University, on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at Merit's offices in Ann Arbor. The workshop is limited to 20 participants; please register as soon as possible to secure your place. Read more and register for the workshop at www.merit.edu/openflow2012/. OpenFlow is a protocol for controlling the behavior of Ethernet switches, related to the general concept of software defined networking. This powerful tool can separate switching hardware from the software used to define a range of features, including load balancing, firewalling, routing and access control. The Global Environment for Network Innovations (GENI) awarded Indiana University with a grant to develop training materials and workshops that familiarize network engineers with OpenFlow. The GENI OpenFlow Training for Network Administrators workshop introduces OpenFlow, and provides the hands-on experience of building a virtualized OpenFlow network that enables multiple, independent tenants to control slices of the network. The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Merit's offices at 1000 Oakbrook Drive, Ann Arbor. Registration for attendees from Merit Member organizations and others with advance approval is $300. Others may attend for $400. Scholarships for this event are available through the Professional Learning scholarship program. Anyone from a Merit Member organization may apply for a scholarship, if funding to attend is not otherwise available through the organization. Scholarship applications must be received by Friday July 13, 2012. We are grateful to the Merit Community Supporters for their contribution to the scholarship program. Online Tech Hosts Webinar On Overcoming Cloud-Based Healthcare Mobility Challenges: Online Tech is hosting an informative Webinar on cloud-based healthcare mobility challenges on Tuesday, July 17 at 2 p.m. Eastern time. Smartphone and tablet devices are outpacing PCs as the primary tool to access email and Internet. This Webinar will encourage health care and other organizations to embrace the mobile channel to keep their customers and employees engaged. The free Webinar will presented by Richard Mendis, co-founder and chief marketing officer of AnyPresence, and April Sage, director of health care markets for Online Tech. Mendis will discuss how the path to cloud-based mobility is within reach even though becoming mobile-enabled has traditionally been complex and cost prohibitive. Sage will discuss the advantages and compliance issues of using cloud platforms to facilitate mobile interaction with ePHI (electronic protected health information). Mendis has spent more than 16 years in the software and information services industry, most recently serving as the vice president of solution management at SAP, where he led product management of SAP's carbon and energy management suite. Presently, Richard serves as chief marketing officer of AnyPresence, which he co-founded in 2010. AnyPresence is the only zero-footprint mobile platform that offers non-technical users the ability to assemble and deploy HTML5 mobile and desktop apps and native iOS and Android apps without having to write code or complete a software install. Sage has been involved in the IT industry for more than two decades, initially founding a technology program in the pre-Windows era. In 2000, April founded a bioinformatics company that supported biotech, pharma, and bioinformatic companies in the development of research portals, drug discovery search engines, and other software systems.
