Organizers Prepare For 'Great Lakes State Fair'

DETROIT(WWJ) - This Labor Day weekend, the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi will play host to a collection of livestock, carnival games and even a circus. It's all a part of the Great Lakes State Fair, a revamped Michigan state fair, which has returned for the first time since its subsidy was cut from state funding in 2009.

Showplace owner Blair Bowman said the inside of the facility will include a full complement of livestock and daily performances by the Detroit Shrine Circus for the three-day fair.

He said he is not concerned about the animals because they have had equestrian and dog shows at the Showplace in previous years.

"They will be inside, rain or shine," he said. "We've got floor protection mechanisms going into place so that the animals can safely traverse around the facility and people can safely look at them."

The fair also will include a large Midway with games and rides, along with multiple vendors and exhibitors. Bowman said there will be more than enough room for all features and entertainment.

"We have 220,000 square feet of beautiful cement floor," he said. "It will be one of the nicest darn state fairs you've ever been to."

Novi Mayor Bob Gatt publicly invited Kid Rock to perform at the event. Although the fair already has a jam-packed lineup of entertainment, Bowman said there is always room for more.
