Body Of Soldier Who Died In Afghanistan Returned

HARRISON TWP. (AP) - The remains of a 29-year-old Army Reserve soldier from suburban Detroit who died in Afghanistan have arrived in Michigan in advance of his funeral Wednesday at Great Lakes National Cemetery.

Staff Sgt. Matthew J. Leach of Ferndale died June 26 in Kandahar during his third combat deployment. The Pentagon didn't release announce the circumstances of his death.

WDWB-TV says Leach's body arrived Monday at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County's Harrison Township, Near Mount Clemens.

Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons funeral home in Sterling Heights says visitation is 2-9 p.m. Tuesday. The funeral is at noon Wednesday at the military cemetery in Oakland County's Holly Township.

Leach was born in Texas and served two tours of duty in Iraq before his deployment to Afghanistan.
