Merit Network Announces Network Security Professional Services

ANN ARBOR -- Merit Network Inc. Tuesday announced the launch of its Network Security Professional Services, a suite of five consulting services that identify vulnerabilities and protect the networks of Merit members from security threats.

Said Elwood Downing, vice president of member relations, communications and services for Merit: "As malicious activity continues to increase over the web, Merit Network is committed to providing our Membership Professional Services and the latest network security practices at affordable prices. This new addition to Merit Professional Services demonstrates the real value of selecting a trusted provider like Merit that provides its members much more than a connection to the Internet. For over 45 years, Merit has grown our community through innovation and responsive support of the needs of our membership."

Network Security Professional Services offer outcome-based pricing, which means that members understand the price of the service they will pay for up front, and that no hidden or additional charges will be added. Merit will work with members to provide additional consulting as needed to ensure an optimal solution is reached.

Network Security is the latest addition to a robust set of professional services Merit provides its membership that includes expert consulting and assistance in virtualization, network engineering and traffic optimization.

Merit offers five Network Security Professional Services:

Remote Port Scan: Periodic port scans can identify unauthorized network applications running on your systems. Merit can run a port scan of your address space using security software to identify accessible systems and open ports on your network. A network map and listing of systems and open TCP ports will be provided. This service includes a consultation to discuss the findings, answer questions and provide suggestions on further actions.

Remote Port Scan and System Verification: This service package can identify compromised systems and rogue Web servers on your network. Starting with the baseline remote port scan, open ports are characterized and matched to likely applications running on the system. Suspicious activity is further investigated on a port by port basis. A network map and a listing of systems, open ports and the likely applications will be provided.

Automated Port Audit: This automated service identifies comprised systems or unusual activity such as rogue Web sites or spam engines. A baseline port scan as described above is combined with a periodic follow up scan. Differences noted from the base scan will be automatically emailed to your designated administrator for further investigation.

Remote Vulnerability Assessment: In addition to the basic port scan, over 40,000 tests are used to identify vulnerabilities on your network. Problems are flagged for further action. Suspicious ports or information are checked by our security consultants to identify compromised systems. The final report will contain a network map, a port listing and specific information of all vulnerabilities found on each system. An overview summarizes the information and provides a prioritized listing of recommendations on how the vulnerabilities should be mitigated.

Cloud Security Assessment: Moving your computing resources to the cloud mitigates some security risks and exposes others. This assessment will examine your environment and provide recommendations to improve security as you migrate to the use of cloud resources. Please contact Merit for a cloud security scope discussion and price quote.
