Detroit Yacht Club Sees Membership Uptick

DETROIT (WWJ) - Despite a struggling local economy, the Detroit Yacht Club is quickly gaining new members.

Detroit Yacht Club Membership and Marketing Director Jim Neumann said the club, which has been around for about one hundred years, has reached about 770 members, with newcomers joining at a constant rate.

The DYC is presenting sponsor of this weekend's APBA Gold Cup hydroplane races -- which Neumann said could help spike membership some more. He said the influx of young adults coming to Detroit could be responsible for the increase.

"All major metropolitan areas that are based on the water are extremely successful because of that lively waterfront," Neumann said. "When they come and experience Belle Isle and they kind of stumble upon the DYC, they can't help but wanna join."

Neumann also attributes part of the spike in membership to the club's good eats and bar.

"We've got fine dining on the property, we've got casual dining on the property, and a bar with the best few of the Detroit River and of anywhere," he said.
