Chicago-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race Wraps Up

MACKINAC ISLAND (AP) - The annual sailboat race from Chicago to Mackinac Island has wrapped up.

The Providence was the top finisher in the Chicago-Mackinac Trophy division with a corrected time of 37 hours, 28 minutes. The Realt Na Mara was the top finisher in the Mackinac Cup division with a corrected time of 38 hours, 28 minutes. Those boats started Saturday.

The Intuition finished atop the cruising division, which started Friday. Its corrected time was 48 hours, 22 minutes.

Much of the fleet was becalmed Sunday, but the breeze picked up and most finished Monday. Winners in various divisions are based on a handicapping system that considers each boat's potential.

About 330 boats set sail in the Lake Michigan tradition that began in 1898. The course is 333 statute-miles.
