Detroit Comic Brings Award-Winning Show To Charles H. Wright Museum

DETROIT (WWJ) - An award-winning actress and comic brings her musical comedy to Detroit this week. "Macho Men and the Women Who Love Them" takes the stage at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History on Thursday.

"It's a really crazy and funny show actually. I play about 10 different characters, the independent Latina woman who is not sure how to handle her relationship with a macho traditional man, because he expects her to cook and clean and do these things all the time, and she's modern and is not sure how to grasp that," said Maria Costa, who wrote and stars in the show.

In the play, Costa breaks down cultural barriers during her journey of self-discovery, as she seeks advice from friends and family and brings out a colorful array of characters.

"It's about my relationship with my husband who's from El Salvadore, and it's about our real life relationship and it really takes people through the process of how we first met to our relationship now and how we sort of learned how to compromise and live in each other's world," said Costa.

Costa, a Detroit native who has been described by critics as the "Latina Lucille Ball and female John Leguizamo," is a recipient of a $25,000 Kresge Artist Fellowship.

"Macho Men and the Women Who Love Them" is in town for one night only -- at the Charles H. Wright Museum on Thursday with a pre-reception mixer with complimentary tequila tasting beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $30.
