Renee Fluker: A Difference Maker In The Community

DETROIT (WWJ) - Former social worker Renee Fluker founded the Midnight Golf  Program 11 years ago.

She said disadvantaged kids needed to learn more than basketball and football; the golf course, after all, is where a lot of business get done in today's world.

"And we have had over a 1,000 young people who have been through Midnight Golf," said Fluker. "We stay with our young people all the way through college."

The students in the golf program meet twice a week for 30 weeks at Marygrove College.

"If you come there you will see a classful of exciting young people that want to learn - not only golf, golf is just a carrot of the program. Our program is mainly life skills," said Fluker.

Each student gets a set of golf clubs and golf apparel. This year the program already has 150 applications for 135 spots.

"They also have the opportunity to play golf on the best golf courses, and we eat and do the museum; so it's something that they have never experienced, a lot of our kids have never been outside of Detroit," said Fluker.
