GOP's Hoekstra To Face Stabenow In November

DETROIT (WWJ) - Following a comfortable victory Tuesday in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate, former Michigan Congressman Pete Hoekstra will be matched up against two-term incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow in November.

While she already leads among likely Michigan voters, 49 to 35 percent, EPIC-MRA pollster Bernie Porn said Stabenow should also be helped by President Barrack Obama's recent rebound in Michigan.

"Things seem to be turning around for President Obama, especially among independent voters," said Porn. "In 2008 there was just such a wave of Democrats turning out and Republicans not turning out it helped up and down the ticket -- even for U.S. Senate."

Porn said Hokestra does have a bit of ground to make up.

"But she (Stabenow) is also below 50 percent, just barely, but below 50 percent. However, she hasn't put an ad on the TV yet," Porn said.

Porn said a key factor to keep an eye on over the next three months is how much money the national Republican Party will provide the Hoekstra campaign for advertising.

"It'll be real interesting to see how, now that it is Hoekstra versus Stabenow, how they are going to frame their messages," said Porn. "Stabenow has certainly an edge in terms of money and favorably ratings at this point -- but that could all change."
