Man Leads Chase, Runs From Police With Baby In Arms

FERNDALE (WWJ) - Ferndale police say a Detroit man is in custody after fleeing from officers in a stolen car, crashing and running from police while carrying a 21-month-old baby in his arms.

Police say 23-year-old Vilary Reed was driving a stolen Crown Victoria on 8 Mile Road around 6 p.m. when officers attempted to pull him over. After bringing the car to a stop at 8 Mile and San Juan Drive, police say Reed then accelerated and sped though Detroit side streets to escape the officer.

Reed eventually lost control and crashed near Pennington Avenue and Pembroke Drive in Detroit.

When Reed emerged from the car, police say he was carrying a baby boy in his arms. During his attempt to escape, Reed handed the boy to a woman standing in a yard, then continued to run.

Police eventually caught Reed running through residential yards. Officers recovered the boy from the woman and transported him to the police station where the child was examined by paramedics. The child was later turned over to his mother.

Reed is reportedly not the father, but was babysitting the child when the incident occurred.

The case will be turned over to the prosecutor's office for a determination of charges.

Reed is currently on parole for a conviction of fleeing and eluding and has previous convictions for receiving and concealing stolen vehicles that go back to 2007.
