Ferndale Police Officer Hit By Drunk Driver

FERNDALE (WWJ) - A 33-year-old woman is behind bars Saturday morning after hitting a Ferndale police officer while driving drunk.

Aimee Sturm was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated. A judge set bond at $750.

Investigators say the incident started when police were sent to a disturbance with a crowd at the corner of E. Breckenridge and Woodward around 2 a.m. Saturday.

An officer was walking across Breckenridge when a Dodge Durango, driven by Sturm, turned from northbound Woodward onto eastbound Breckenridge and headed in the direction of the officer.

According to Ferndale police, the officer signaled and yelled for the vehicle to stop, but Sturm kept driving and struck the officer.

Police say after hitting the officer, Sturm continued driving into a parking lot. Officers finally stopped her and said she "seemed unaware that she ran into a person."

Investigators say Sturm took a breath test and registered .21 blood alcohol content. The legal limit in Michigan is .08.

The officer was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries before being released.
