New Michigan Casinos Proposal Will Not Be On November Ballot

DETROIT (WWJ) - Just a couple of days after the Supreme Court appeared to be paving the way for it, a proposal to create eight new Michigan casinos will not appear on the November ballot.

Republicans on the Board of State Canvassers managed to block the proposed constitutional amendment despite a 2-1 vote to approve it.

The vote was split along party lines, with Republican Norm Shinkle missing because he's at the GOP Convention in Tampa, Fla. To win approval, "yes" votes had to include a Democrat and a Republican.

Monday's vote on the casino amendment comes after the Michigan Supreme Court ruled just on Friday the proposal could go before voters.

In January, Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson spilled the beans on Charlie Langton's Talk Radio 1270 show about a planned petition drive to bring new casinos to nine to 11 Michigan communities.

Patterson added the new casinos would be a way to raise money for cash strapped communities across the state, but he didn't say whether he would expressly support it.
