Police: Suspect In Murder Of Officer Found Dead

WEST BLOOMFIELD TWP (WWJ) - After a 20 hour standoff, a barricaded gunman that fatally shot West Bloomfield Police Officer Patrick O'Rourke is dead.

A robot, supplied by the Michigan State Police, was utilized to obtain a visual on the suspect, Ricky Coley, who was observed motionless in a bed.

"The image from the robot was he was laying on his bed. The image from the robot was from toe to head and he was surrounded by knives, weapons and wearing white goggles," West Bloomfield Township Supervisor Michele Economou Ureste told WWJ's Kathryn Larson.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team then made entry into the home and discovered Coley dead. (An autopsy later determined that he had died from a gunshot wound to the head.)

Police say O'Rourke, a 39-year-old married father of four and a 12-year veteran of the West Bloomfield Police Department, was fatally shot Sunday night, leading to the standoff that continued into Monday evening.

The deadly incident began at around 10 p.m. Sunday when family members called police after the suspect fired a shot inside a home on Forest Edge Lane, in the area of Pontiac Trail and Halsted.

Officers arrived and entered the home, Lt. Tim Diamond said, shots were fired from an upstairs bedroom and O'Rourke was hit. Diamond would not say how many times the officer was wounded.

A complete investigation will be conducted by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.
