Hundreds Adopt Animals During Detroit Zoo's Rescue Event

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - Hundreds of people considering adopting a pet stopped by the Detroit Zoo Sunday afternoon where hundreds of animals were up for adoption.

The zoo played host to the annual "Meet your Best Friend at the Zoo" where dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are up for adoption from local animal welfare groups.

Vickie Abbott of West Bloomfield and her family adopted a beagle mix, it's the fourth dog they've adopted.

Vickie says it feels good. "It's what we've always done, is always done a rescue," she said. "There are so many dogs that - just because they are not a thoroughbred doesn't mean they are not a good dog - they are usually a better dog."

Abbot's daughter, 12-year-old Julia, says when she saw that particular dog, she knew she had to take her home. "She's about the right size and she's really cute."

A few hundred dogs and cats were adopted at the event, which ran until 5 p.m. Sunday.
