Report: Not Much Good News For Air Travelers

DETROIT (WWJ) - Plan to fly in the near future? A recent government report says that there's not much good news for air travelers.

The report shows that airline passengers can expect to choose from fewer carriers, as well as fewer flights to smaller cities.

And let's not forget, more baggage and other fees as the industry continues to deal with high fuel prices, as well as transition from a decade of bankruptcies and mergers.

David Fishman, President of Cadillac Travel Group, based in Southfield, says if you have the option, travel by car.

"Because of the nature of dealing with TSA and parking and having to get to the airport, so far in advance - sometimes if it's anywhere from four, five, six hours drive - it sometimes makes more sense to drive - depending on how soon you need to be somewhere," he tells WWJ's Zahra Huber. "Fishman says if you do need to fly -- book early. He says flights during Easter are already being snatched up."

Fishman recommends ways to cut your travel costs, such as, booking package deals ...bundling your air, hotel and rentals together for better savings.

He says you should pack lighter to avoid costly baggage fees and consider a credit card that allows you to fly without paying additional fees for your baggage.
