Firefighters Deliver Smoke Detectors To Detroit Neighborhood

DETROIT (AP) - Firefighters will go door-to-door through a Detroit neighborhood Friday afternoon, passing out free smoke detectors and batteries.

Fifty homes near Gardner Elementary School on Detroit's west side will receive gift bags from the Energizer Battery Co. Each gift bag also will include a flashlight.

Fire officials say working smoke detectors are the best way to protect families and homes from fire.

Beginning Nov. 2, Detroit residents can get replacement 9-volt batteries from local firehouses to replace old smoke alarm batteries.

The city says Energizer has donated more than 6,000 batteries to the "Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery" campaign which encourages residents to replace smoke alarm batteries when they change their clocks in the fall for daylight saving time.
