Man Gets 7-15 Years In Toddler Poisoning

GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) - A Grand Rapids-area man has been sentenced to seven to 15 years in prison for causing the accidental drug death of a 1-year-old boy.

Sixty-year-old Gregg Busby pleaded guilty Aug. 28 to involuntary manslaughter in the Feb. 10 death of Antonio Garcia-Lazarski. Kent County Circuit Judge Dennis Leiber sentenced him Thursday.

"I don't think it's anything I'll ever live down. I don't know if I want to," Busby said in court Thursday. "I'm just sorry. I'm very sorry it happened."

Busby admitted that he crushed up morphine and Benadryl pills and gave it to the boy in a cup of juice. According to Kent County court records, Busby indicated he gave the child the mixture to calm him and make him feel better. The boy died the next day.

Busby was living with the boy's grandmother at the time at her home in Gaines Township.

The boy had a chronic inherited disease that affected his lungs and bones. The Grand Rapids Press says that morphine was not one of his medications.
