Mother's Boyfriend Suspected In Infant's Death

BRANDON TWP. (WWJ) - It's the third tragic death of a Southeast Michigan infant in recent days -- and the second in Oakland County this week.

Oakland County Sheriff's deputies were called out to a home on Hidden Hills Lane in Brandon Township Thursday afternoon about an infant who was not breathing. When they got there they found a 4-month-old boy unresponsive on the floor.

The infant was taken to Genesys Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Doctors observed the infant suffered from severe head trauma, which was confirmed by the Oakland County Medical Examiner in an autopsy.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard said a boyfriend of the child's mother who was babysitting the child. His 4-year-old daughter was asleep in another room at the time of the incident.

That man, who had not yet been named by authorities, is now in police custody and is expected to be charged with murder.

"This case and all that involve an adult causing the death of babies are disgusting," said Bouchard. "If you can't take care of a baby or stand to hear the baby crying, call someone that can, for heaven's sake. There is no cell deep and dark enough for people like this. "

Bouchard said the suspect has an extensive criminal history and has served time in prison for breaking and entering.

Arraignment is set for Saturday.  The man's name will be released at that time.
