Exit Polls: Michigan Proposals 2-6 Will Likely Fail

LANSING (WWJ) - Voters in Michigan had plenty of proposals to consider on Tuesday and, with the polls closed across a majority of the state, we're getting closer to knowing how they will fair.

Exit polling from Lansing-based EPIC/MRA shows Proposals 2 through 6 heading for defeat, while Proposal 1 -- the controversial emergency manager law -- too close to call.

Reported WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick, "Five of the six issues on the ballot today were constitutional amendments. The first one, the emergency manager law, was a change in the statute, which the governor wanted.

"How they will come out tonight, the popular wisdom is ... they probably all go down. I'm not sure I'm a member of that club but I remain to be convinced that will be the case," Skubick said.

Gov. Rick Snyder had  asked that Michigan voters vote 'Yes' on Prop 1 and 'No' on the rest. He said Props 2 and 5, in particular, could be economically devastating to our state's economy.

Statewide proposals rundown:

Proposal 1 will decide whether or not to keep Public Act 4 – the emergency manger law. This law was passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Snyder to help financially struggling cities and schools get back on a solid financial footing.

Proposal 2 would amend the state constitution and give workers the right to organize and bargain collectively through labor unions. Supporters pushed the proposal fearing the Governor and State Legislature will make Michigan a Right to Work state. Opponents say the proposal would eliminate hundreds of existing labor laws in the process.

Proposal 3 would force Michigan to have 25 percent of its electricity come from renewable energy sources by 2025.

Proposal 4 would undo a law signed by Governor Snyder and force Michigan's 60-thousand home health care workers to join a labor union.

Proposal 5 would require that any future increases of the tax rate or tax base be approved by either a two-thirds majority of the legislature or a statewide vote.

Proposal 6 would force a statewide vote for any bridge or tunnel project already under construction, not just the New International Trade Crossing otherwise know as the second bridge from Detroit to Windsor, or any built thereafter.
