Police Catch Sex Offender Searching School Trash

WAKEFILED (AP) - Police say they've arrested a 64-year-old registered sex offender rummaging through trash bins at a school in Michigan's Upper Peninsula looking for clothing and notes from students.

State police say the man, whose name wasn't immediately released, was arrested this week at his home in Wakefield.

Troopers began investigating the man following a Nov. 20 report that he was rummaging through trash at the Wakefield-Marenisco schools' campus.

Police say they determined that the man went through the large trash bins on a weekly basis. He was being held at the Gogebic County Jail.

The man is facing a charge of being a registered sex offender loitering in a School Safety Zone. If convicted, he could be sentenced to jail time.
