Meetings Focus On Rapid Transit Along Woodward Avenue

BERKLEY (WWJ) - If you'd like to see rapid transit between Detroit and Pontiac, you may want to attend one of several public meetings being held.

The meeting held in Berkley on Monday night focused on the Woodward Rapid Transit Alternatives Analysis study and it drew a packed audience.

Most people like Shirley Hanson of Berkley support a rapid transit system - since she lives a couple of blocks off of Woodward :

"I really, really think the important thing to make this city grow and to connect the suburbs with the city .. is to have some kind of mass transit which most other metropolitan areas have," said Hanson.

Rapid Transit (BFisher)One woman said she is concerned though about the cost of the system and if it will come from her tax dollars, but Jim Hammond of Royal Oak came out in support of the idea.

"I would like to have rapid transit that would be easily accessible for most of the residents around the area - especially those who - want an alternative to driving every day," said Hammond. "I'd like to have the ability to stop at many locations that are currently are not served."

The overall feeling was that most people would use mass transit for now more public meetings are planned over the next couple of weeks to discuss the issue.
