Layoff Of Almost 500 City Employees Expected In New Year

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit is making plans to layoff 400 to 500 city employees in the new year, which is roughly 5-percent of the workforce. It's one of many steps to try to fix the city's financial crisis.

During a news conference Friday, Mayor Dave Bing says his administration is doing everything possible to avoid having Governor Snyder appoint a financial emergency manager.

"The reality is that if we don't get some of these milestones implemented, he has no choice," Bing said. "Our job is to make sure we get on with the execution of the milestones."

Bing also said bankruptcy would be the "wrong approach" for both Detroit and the state.
