Kwame Kilpatrick To Spend Weekend In Jail On 14 Parole Violations

DETROIT (WWJ) - Kwame Kilpatrick is headed back to jail for the weekend, after the Michigan Department of Corrections served him Thursday night with 14 parole violation charges. Kilpatrick was expected to go directly to jail Friday afternoon after listening to a full day of testimony in his federal corruption trial.

Department of Corrections Spokesman Russ Marlan said Kilpatrick will go to the Detroit Residential Re-entry Center, where his dinner choices will include baked fish with tartar sauce or a veggie bean patty.

When Kilpatrick was served with the parole violation charges, his parole officer offered him the opportunity to  serve an immediate sanction of three days in custody and waive the formal hearing process -- to which Kilpatrick agreed.

The former mayor is expected to be released from jail early Monday, just in time to get back in court for his federal trial.

The parole violations are another bump on the former Detroit mayor's long road of restitution to the city as part of a conviction for lying under oath in a police whistleblower case. He subsequently served 14 months in prison for violating his probation in that case, and still owes Detroit over $850,000.

A condition of Kilpatrick's parole states that he is required to report gifts and other income, something officials say he has failed to do on a number of occasions.
