Prosecutors Rest Case Against Kwame Kilpatrick

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Prosecutors have rested their case on the 64th day of trial against former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

The final government witness Thursday was an agent from the Environmental Protection Agency who testified about cancelled checks found at the office of Kilpatrick pal Bobby Ferguson, a construction contractor who's also on trial.

Kilpatrick, his father Bernard and Ferguson are charged with a sweeping conspiracy to fix city contracts and shake down businesses. The government says Kwame Kilpatrick pocketed bribes and also used a nonprofit fund as a slush fund for his personal use.

But the trial isn't over -- not even close. Defense attorneys are expected to call witnesses for up to two weeks.

Kilpatrick quit office in 2008 after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice in a different matter.
