AMC's Original Scripted Drama Series Low Winter Sun Approved for Film Incentives
LANSING – The Michigan Film Office announced Monday that AMC's original scripted drama series Low Winter Sun has been approved for a film incentive from the state.
Set in Detroit, the series starts with a crime that will alter a detective's life forever.
The pilot for the series was filmed in Detroit in September. Filming on the nine additional episodes is expected to begin in Detroit this spring and run through the end of summer.
Low Winter Sun is a co-production between Endemol Studios and AMC Studios. Chris Mundy (Criminal Minds, Cold Case) wrote the pilot and serves as show runner and executive producer. The cast includes Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes and Zero Dark Thirty) and Lennie James (The Walking Dead, Jericho).
Said Margaret O'Riley, director of the Michigan Film Office. "As a high profile television series, this project will provide significant opportunities for our crew, talent and support services. It also sends a strong signal about the quality of projects we are attracting to Michigan."
The project was awarded an incentive of $7,544,611 and expects to hire 245 Michigan workers with a full time equivalent of 148 jobs.
The series will be telecast nationally on AMC, and will join a lineup that includes Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead. Low Winter Sun will showcase locations throughout Detroit during filming.
In the state's current fiscal year 2013, eight projects have been awarded a total of $9,324,439 on $32,352,604 of approved production expenditures for the year. These projects are expected to create 568 Michigan hires with a full time equivalent of 204 jobs.
The Michigan Economic Development Corp. Film Review Committee, comprised of senior MEDC staff including the Michigan Film Commissioner, reviews all completed applications using the statute to guide approval decisions.
The Michigan Film Office was created in 1979 to assist and attract incoming production companies and promote the growth of Michigan's own film industry.
