Detroit Mother Charged After 2 Children Left Home Alone

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A woman has been charged with child abuse after authorities say she left her two children alone in a Detroit home that was broken into.

Deedra Pitts, 31, was expected to be arraigned Saturday in 36 District Court on two counts of fourth-degree child abuse.

Police were called Thursday morning to a house on Pinehurst Street, near Meyers and West Chicago Road, after a 10-year-old dialed 911 and went to a next door seeking help. Carrying his 10-month-old sister, the frightened child said someone was in his house.

The children, who weren't hurt, were taken to a nearby police station and released to the father.

The mother, who was alarmed to come home to find her kids were gone, told WWJ Newsradio 950′s Vickie Thomas she'd left them in the care of her sister.
