Family Pleads For Tips In Child Hit-And-Run

DETROIT (WWJ) - Family members and Crime Stoppers are hoping a $2,500 reward will help them find the person responsible for hitting and killing a 10-year-old boy on Detroit's east side.

Police say Christopher Sandoval was taking out the trash outside his east side Detroit home when he was struck by a truck that ran off the road.

It happened on Sunday, March 4 at around 1:30 p.m outside a home on Bringard Drive near 8 Mile Road and Eastland Mall. chris with curious george

It's not clear why the truck went off the road, but after leaving the scene, witnesses told police the driver stopped a block away to remove the trash can lodged under his truck before taking off again.

"As soon was on as we heard the noise, I had my other boy look out. He said there's garbage all over the street, " said Christopher's father, through tears, at a news conference Wednesday.

"I looked out the door and seen Christopher's body laying in the street. It was in the front of the house -- not even 50 feet, 100 feet away from the door, " he said.

Christopher's mom, Lisa, described her son as a typical little boy.

"I'd take him to the doctor with his brother, and they'd have to get their immunizations -- and Christopher was the one who had to have him that time.

"He'd roll himself up in the curtain and hide in there, and the doctor would come in and say, 'Well, where's the boy that's supposed to get the shots?' And he'd say, it's the one over there," she said. "He'd hide when things had to be done to him."

The suspect is described as a light-skinned white male in his 40s with a mustache.  He was  driving a red 2000 or 2001 Dodge Ram, possibly with a snowplow attached.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Crime Stoppers Tip Line at 1-800-SPEAK UP. You can also text your tip to CRIMES (274637).  As always, tipsters may remain anonymous.
