6-Year-Old Asks Police To Take Him To Jail After Driving Dad's Car

LAPEER (WWJ) - A 6-year-old goes for a joy ride in Lapeer County.

Police say the child was spotted by a couple of drivers on US 24 near I-96 - and one of them convinced him to pull over and alerted police.

Lapeer County Deputy Karl Sapp says the boy knew he was doing something wrong.

"The young guy there stopped the car said that he was actually doing pretty good and he was able to get the vehicle stopped - had the seat all the way forward," said Sapp.

The child told him he was on his way to get the car fixed-- because his dad had bumped into something earlier that day.

"He lied to me a little bit," he said. "He was scared and he wanted to go to jail instead of going with his dad - so I think he knew he was in trouble."

He says the boy's parents were sleeping when he took the keys.

"Central dispatch had the address based on the plate and a city officer went there, woke him (the father) up and brought the father to the scene," said Sapp. "Apparently the keys are usually up on the refrigerator or some other place but there was another set left on the counter and he had taken that set, unbeknownst to them."

Sapp says the boy told him it was his first time driving a car and that he'd learned by watching.
