Consumers Energy Signs Agreement With Northern Michigan Gas Producer

KALKASKA -- Consumers Energy has begun to purchase natural gas directly from a Michigan producer, BreitBurn Operating L.P.

The initial purchase is for April 2013 business in the amount of approximately $2 million. This gas supply contract is part of Consumers Energy's commitment to Pure Michigan Business Connect, a public-private initiative developed by the Michigan Economic Development Corp., which connects Michigan companies with opportunities to help them grow and expand. The supply contract will help serve Consumers Energy's 1.7 million natural gas customers.

"Consumers Energy is committed to increasing its purchase of goods and services needed by our customers from Michigan-based businesses," said Tim Sparks, vice president of energy supply operations for the Jackson-based utility. "Purchasing this initial $2 million in natural gas supply from BreitBurn Operating continues our strategic plan to help Michigan businesses grow."

Consumers Energy has doubled to $500 million its commitment to purchase Michigan-made goods and services over five years, from 2011-2016. The utility's commitment to increase its business contracts with Michigan companies is in addition to the $2 billion annually it now spends in the state. These investments are in customer service, electric and natural gas operations, energy efficiency, renewable energy and environmental stewardship.
