Buena Vista Teachers To Return To Classrooms

BUENA VISTA TWP. (AP) - More than two dozen teachers laid off in the financially troubled Buena Vista Schools district will return to work on Monday.

School board members voted 6-0 Friday night to get the 27 teachers back on the job. They were laid off May 7.

The 400-student district in Saginaw County's Buena Vista Township near Saginaw hasn't held class since May 3 because it ran out of money for payroll. The cash crunch came after the state withheld aid to make up for earlier overpayments.

State schools Superintendent Mike Flanagan earlier this week approved the district's deficit elimination plan which allows the release of $460,000 in state aid.

Sharp enrollment drops contributed to the district going into debt in 2011, with its deficit reaching $1 million last July.
