Federal Health Care Reform A Focus On Mackinac
MACKINAC ISLAND (WWJ) - National health care reform is creating some buzz on day one of the Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island.
Dr. Ora Pescovitz, CEO of the University of Michigan Health System, says federal money being put into expanded Medicaid coverage for states is money well-spent.
"If we can pass this legislation, we will make our citizens healthier, and we'll make our pocketbook healthier," Pescovitz told WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton.
"We're taking people, who up until now have been uninsured and have resulted to costs to all of us -- the rest of us who've had insurance -- and now these people are not just going to survive, they're going to thrive," she said.
Pescovitz said an expanded Medicaid program will bring $1 billion in federal dollars into our state.

In Michigan, Gov. Rick Snyder has proposed setting aside projected savings from people who are covered by state funds that would be under federal care in the new program.
