Woman Hit, Killed After Stopping To Help At Crash

KENTWOOD (WWJ/AP) - A good deed led to tragedy Thursday night in West Michigan.

Police say a good Samaritan who'd stopped to help at an accident scene was struck and killed by one of the vehicles that had been involved in the crash.

Kentwood Police Chief Tom Hillen told The Grand Rapids Press that an elderly pickup truck driver somehow hit woman, adding that it was not immediately clear why the pickup driver began moving again after the crash.

Hillen said he was told the victim was dragged by the  pickup.

The woman's name wasn't immediately released.

The pickup driver was not arrested. The investigation is ongoing and Kent County prosecutors will review the case.

The initial crash involved an SUV and the pickup in front of the East Hills Fitness and Athletic Club. Police shut down a portion of East Paris Avenue for more than three hours following the incident. It was reopened about 7:15 p.m. Thursday.
