Mother Of Aiyana Jones Testifies For Prosecution On First Day Of Trial

DETROIT (WWJ) - Opening statements in the case against a city cop who allegedly shot and killed the little girl were made Monday.

The mother of Aiyana Stanley Jones says she was in another room when her daughter was shot to death. The statement came Monday on day one of the trial for the officer who killed the 7-year-old during a raid.

Dominika Stanley says police ordered her to sit on the couch shortly after she entered the living room where her daughter was killed.

"About two or three hours," replied Stanley when asked how long she sat on the couch.

Stanley says it was only then that police told her about her daughter and took her the hospital.

"They took me in this room, and then the doctors came and talked to me .... (they told me) my baby didn't make it," she said.

Detroit Officer Joseph Weekley is charged with involuntary manslaughter of 7-year-old Jones during a 2010 police raid.

The prosecution says Weekly acted negligent when his gun went off.

Weekley claims the shooting was an accident.

Reality show cameras were running when the incident occurred.

The trial is expected to last several weeks.
