Motor City Pride Parade Highlights Efforts To Repeal Ban On Gay Marriage

DETROIT (WWJ) - Thousands of people attended the Motor City Pride this weekend in downtown Detroit.

WWJ's Beth Fisher reports members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community are talking about efforts to repeal Michigan's gay marriage ban.

Pam of Diamondale said marriage equality is important:

"I'd like to see it sped up a bit," she said. "We need to accept gay marriage and allow people the same rights as all others have."

Motor City Pride 3(BFisher)A ballot initiative is planned for 2016 to repeal Michigan's ban on gay marriage. Sharon Early of Warren says things aren't moving very quickly though.

"We may be moving out of state just so we can get married," said Early. "But I wish it was faster here in Michigan and we'd stay - definitely, but I don't think so."

Michael Hercliff of Ypsilanti said he'd like to see the repeal of Michigan's ban on gay marriage.

"From what I've seen, it seems like it's going to be a long ways out. I think it's really important ... I can tell ... there has been a big shift in Michigan, most people support gay marriage now," he said.

Democratic State Senators introduced a bill last week to ask voters about gay marriage in 2014, but it's not expected to pass the Republican-controlled Michigan legislature.
