Lawmakers OK $10 Fee Hike For Off-Road Vehicles

LANSING (AP) - Off-road vehicle drivers in Michigan will pay at least $10 more for a license under legislation expected to be signed by Gov. Rick Snyder.

The state Senate on Tuesday narrowly approved fee hikes that are factored into the state budget that takes effect in the fall.

Starting in April 2014, an annual off-road vehicle license fee will cost about $26 instead of $16. It'll cost roughly $36 to ride on state off-road vehicle trails for a year.

Though lawmakers recently passed a budget assuming the fee hikes would raise an extra $2.7 million next year, senators struggled to pass the increases. The bill passed on a 20-18 vote.

An ORV must be licensed annually with the state Department of Natural Resources if it will be used anywhere other than private property. Licenses are valid from April 1 through March 31 of the following year, regardless of the date of purchase.

The Michigan ORV trail system includes over 3,200 miles with over 70 percent of the system contained in state forests. For more information, visit www.michigan.gov.
