Boy, 8, Dies After Canoe Tips In Lake Michigan

GLEN ARBOR TOWNSHIP (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say an 8-year- boy who was canoeing with his father in northern Lake Michigan died after the vessel overturned in the chilly waters.

The Leelanau County sheriff's department said the Ann Arbor youngster and his 48-year-old father canoed Monday from D.H. Day Campground to North Manitou Island.

Sheriff's officials said the two were on their way back when the canoe overturned about half a mile from shore. The man called for help on this cell phone, and the U.S. Coast Guard, National Park Service, Leelanau County Sheriff's Office and Glen Arbor Fire Department responded.

WDIV-TV reported the boy was airlifted to Munson Hospital in Traverse City, where he was pronounced dead. The father was transported to Munson by ambulance.

Both were wearing life jackets but suffered from hypothermia. The water temperature was reported to be 55 degrees at the time.

The campground is in Glen Arbor Township and North Manitou Island is about 10 miles north. Both are part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
