Scorcher Alert: Belle Isle Offers Cool Respite

DETROIT (WWJ) With temperatures set to scorch, metro Detroiters are making plans to stay cool Wednesday.

"92, sunny and hot and a whole bunch of old folks, so it's going to be interesting," said one woman who plans to attend a Belle Isle event for retired police officers.

They're prepared for the heat.

"Everyone on the committee bought water, these old veterans are tough," she added.

It's also Metro Detroit Youth Day on the island, with about 30,000 young visitors expected. It makes it a day Belle Isle will have a large crowd of both old and young people.

Clifton Webb was out running before the sun rose, saying he wanted to get in his 5 miles prior to the heat really kicking in. "It's extremely hard," he said, laughing, and adding that he had to get it done early. "Running directly in the sun is just like putting a person on your back."

A heat advisory is in effect both Wednesday and Thursday, so why not just take a day off? "Regimen, my man, regimen," Webb said.
